Yet historically, entering treatment for alcohol or drug addiction has been difficult for women due to social, cultural and family patterns. Chronic alcohol and/or drug abuse takes a heavier physical toll on women than on men. The related medical problems such as brain, heart, and liver damage progress more rapidly in women than in men as stated by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).The Genesis Foundation has pride in declaring that they are among the pioneers in providing treatment to female addicts. The remarkable part here is that the entire unit is controlled by Women, from Psychiatrist to Administrative staff to those working directly with the patients.
